The designated headwaters of the Sacramento River are at about 3600 feet
(1100 m) elevation in Mount Shasta City Park. The USGS cites the river's source
as the confluence of the South Fork Sacramento River and Middle Fork Sacramento
River.
On July 14, 1991 A Southern Pacific Railroad tanker spilled toxic chemicals
into the waters. A 35-mile section was affected and virtually wiped out of all
life. The wonderful news almost ten years later and $33,000,000 dollars into
recovery, a miracle has transpired and everyone is quite surprised! Rainbow
stock was captured and replanted from healthy sections of water and the complex
insect life is well on its way to reestablishing.

Castle Crags Gold. After a stage robbery a great fortune in gold was hidden
in the Crags and to this day it has not been found.
Originally centered about a mile south of the current town and named Pusher
because in this location extra engines were needed to push the train up the
steep canyon.
Name was changed to Dunsmuir in 1886 when Canada's Alexander Dunsmuir fell in
love with the town and promised the town a water fountain if they named the town
after his family. The fountain is now at the city park.
