Calcasieu Lake, affectionately referred to by locals as Big Lake, is the finest
saltwater fishing lake in Louisiana-and possibly the finest coastal saltwater
estuary in the country. Calcasieu Lake is blessed with 10-pound speckled trout,
four feet long red fish, and giant flounder.
For generations, the Calcasieu Estuary has been regarded as a fishing
destination of world-class proportions. An 11.2-pound speckled trout was
recently recorded, and state records are being broken throughout the region,
including a 12.38-pound speckled trout, an 11.25-pound red snapper, and a
36-inch king mackerel caught in the Gulf of Mexico, which is easily accessible
through the Calcasieu River-one of many tributaries to the Gulf. Redfish have
been weighing in between 35 and 40 pounds, and black drum have been weighing in
as big as 60 to 70 pounds.
In addition to speckled trout and red fish, flounder abound the oyster reef
bottoms and salt grass marshes of Calcasieu Lake, while snapper, cobia, and
tripletail await your calcasieu lake fishing guides adventure.

Calcasieu Lake
At 12 miles long by nine miles wide, Calcasieu Lake which is 2 1/2 hours
east of Houston, 3 1/2 hours south of Shreveport and 3 hours west of New
Orleans provides ample room for trophy trout and Redfish to roam.
Numerous other species of game fish make their home in the Great
Calcasieu Estuary, including flounder, black drum, sand trout,
sheepshead, croakers, and ladyfish. Known
locally as Big Lake, it averages less than six feet deep. The adjacent
40-mile-long, 40-foot deep Calcasieu Ship Channel provides fish and
boaters easy access to the Gulf of Mexico. It also provides a deep
sanctuary for fish to escape weather extremes or pressure.
Anglers don't usually catch consistent trout limits on Big Lake, but
they usually find quality fish. Specks don't even attract attention
until they weigh more than 9 pounds. Often, anglers may catch a dozen or
more fish averaging 5 to 6 pounds. Anglers start catching huge trout in
late March. The peak "trophy run" occurs in mid-May to mid-June, but
anglers may land huge fish through late fall.
Whether you are looking for the excitement of chasing a tailing redfish
or the monster trout that Calcasieu Lake is known for, you've come to
the right spot.
