The Williamson is the primary tributary of Upper Klamath Lake. It runs
into Upper Klamath Lake on the north shore about 40 miles from Klamath
falls. It hosts some of the largest Rainbow and Brown Trout in the
Continental United States. These fish average 22" with many fish over
25", and every year there are several fish over 30" landed. It is
primarily spring fed so even in the dead of summer the water is clear
and cold. The upper reaches maintain "spring creek" characteristics with
CRYSTAL clear cold slow moving water. The lower reaches of the river
change drastically from deep lava rock ledges to slow lake like flats.
It is not an easy river to fish and will test even expert fisherman.
Klamath Lake has 90,000 surface acres, an average depth of 8 feet, an
endless supply of aquatic food, thousands upon thousands of native trout
(big 5 lb+, bigger 10 lbs, monster 15 lb+) and only two inlet rivers;
the Wood and the Williamson. The lodge we work with fronts over 2.5
miles of prime Williamson fishing water.
Fishing is fantastic in the Klamath Basin. A few minutes from the lodge
are the Wood River, Klamath Lake, Agency Lake and the Sprague River. All
of these locations offer unique flyfishing opportunities. The headwaters
of the Williamson is another option.
The lodge provides some of the best opportunities on the river to fish
the hexagenia hatch which typically happens in late June and into July.
The large mayflies emerge from the silt bottom at sunset each evening
and provide an irresistible meal for the big wild trout. You are able to
walk out your door and into the excitement of the hex hatch.
Professional fishing guides are advisable and available at the lodge.
They are all certified licensed guides. They are also certified good
people. A day on the river is enjoyable as well as educational. Spend a
day or two with a guide then use the ranch boats to fish on your own.
