North Platte River

North Platte River

The North Platte starts high in the Mount Zirkel Wilderness and runs north out of Colorado into Wyoming through a vast grassy basin. North Park is an impressive island of grasslands in the midst of the Rockies. This terrain creates a classic meandering, oxbow meadow-type river, which makes a solid fishing stream. The river eventually dives into Northgate Canyon and cuts into the Medicine Bow Mountains creating a fine whitewater run.

Wyoming's North Platte River, drains the southeastern corner of Wyoming. The river has gained a reputation as a blue-ribbon trout fishery, but it's also a place where you can fish alone, especially if you leave the beaten path. The premier trout waters encompass the section of the river from the headwaters through the town of Saratoga and the tail-water sections. The rest has seasonally good fishing.

Gray Reef, the extraordinary tailwater section on the North Platte, is a flyfishing destination that generates superlatives. Fastest, strongest and biggest are words frequently use to describe the fish here. Rainbows between 18-20 inches are quite common and landing them is kind of like flying a kite on a fly rod in a Wyoming gale. These are just the middleweights of the river; the real brutes will test your tackle and skills to the very limit.
