American River Fly Fishing Report – August 30
By John Hubbard, Fly Fishing Specialties
Current Conditions
The American is fishing well right now with a lot of hatchery steelhead in the system and a few salmon showing up. Action has been fairly consistent for early season, making it a great time to get out before the river closes in a couple of weeks.
What’s Working
We mostly did some indicator nymphing, and the fish responded nicely. Productive flies included:
Fox’s Pupa
Bird’s Nests
Caddis soft hackles (swinging)
Sculpin patterns
A few also came on egg imitations
Right now, fish are really keying in on caddis, so lean on those patterns for best results.
Guide’s Tip
If you’re planning to hit the American soon, focus on swinging or nymphing caddis patterns. The steelhead are there, the action is steady, and with the season closing soon, now’s the time to make a trip.
Get out, enjoy the cool fall weather, and hook into some steelhead while you can.
