California Delta Fly Fishing Report

Weather & Water:
A mild fall day on the California Delta brought pleasant conditions with a daytime high of 75°F and light winds. Water temperatures held steady around 63°F, offering decent clarity in most sloughs and flooded islands. The moderate temps made for a comfortable day on the water, though the bite remained spotty throughout much of the day.
Target Species: Striped Bass & Largemouth Bass
Overall Conditions: Fair
Fishing was fair at best. The group covered a good mix of main-channel edges, flooded tule islands, and backwater pockets in search of both stripers and largemouth. Striped bass were found in small pods, with most fish running in the 2 – 4 lb range and a few larger fish coming off of the shelf lines. The largemouth bite was just as slow, with a couple of solid fish coming out of shaded structure throughout the day.
Hot Flies:

These rattling Clousers were the clear producers of the day. Both colorways seemed to be equally effective. Erratic retrieves with an occasional pause seemed to trigger the best takes.
Guide Notes:
Toby Uppinghouse of Edgewater Outfitters concentrated on several productive zones based from the tidal influences and emphasized the importance of working fast sinking Rio Outbound Short lines and adjusting retrieve speed with current flow. Staying mobile and covering water was key to finding active fish.
Summary:
A solid early November outing on the Delta – comfortable conditions, light boat traffic, and a handful of quality fish to hand. The fall striper migration is showing signs of life, and with cooling nights ahead, the bite should continue to improve as fish feed up before winter.
