Lake Almanor Fly Fishing Report – Spring 2026

With improving spring weather, Lake Almanor fly fishing is starting to heat up as we move deeper into March. Water conditions are stabilizing and fish activity is increasing across the lake.

Smallmouth Bass Pre-Spawn Action

Right now Lake Almanor smallmouth bass are in the pre-spawn phase and actively feeding. This is a great time to target aggressive fish as they stage before moving onto beds. We expect bass to begin pairing off within the next week or two.

Once the spawn begins, it’s best to give the bass about two weeks to complete their spawn before targeting them again. Responsible fishing during this period helps protect the fishery. Bass tournaments held during the spawn have begun to take a noticeable toll on the local smallmouth population, so practicing restraint during this window is important for the long-term health of the lake.

Chironomid Hatch Approaching (April–May)

The next big event for Lake Almanor fly anglers is the annual Chironomid hatch, which typically kicks off in April and runs through May.

This is one of the most productive times of the year on the lake. During the Chironomid hatch we regularly see big brown trout and rainbow trout feeding heavily, and it’s common to have double-digit days on quality fish.

For anglers looking for consistent action and opportunities at trophy trout, this hatch is one of the best windows of the entire season.

The Famous Lake Almanor Hex Hatch (June)

After the Chironomid season wraps up, attention shifts to the legendary Hexagenia (Hex) hatch in June.

The Lake Almanor Hex hatch is one of the most anticipated dry-fly events in Northern California. Early indicators suggest the hatch is shaping up to be excellent this year, with strong conditions lining up for a productive season.

Watching large trout explode on giant Hex dry flies at dusk is one of the most exciting experiences in fly fishing.
