Fishing Reports

Lake Oroville is a reservoir in the foothills of Northern California.  It is approximately 70 miles northeast of Sacramento.  It is impounded by Oroville Dam which is the largest earth dam in the United States standing at 770 feet tall.  It is a great place to have a day of bass fishing for Spotted Bass, Smallmouth Bass, and other warm water species.  There are multiple boat ramps, so fishermen could easily find their own ways to their favorite fishing spot.

The fishing is currently good to hot depending on who you ask.  Fish can be found sitting off of points, rock walls, coves, and structure.  If you can see a shelf line, drop your cast right off the edge of it.  Make sure to drop a cast into the corner of a cove.  If you see a downed log, make a cast close to it.  Fish were near the top all the way down to eight feet.  Streamer presentations with smaller flies that can represent a minnow like a size 8 Crystal Bugger in white.  An intermediate line will help, but it is not necessary.  Float and fly was the most effective.  Suspend a black Dead Drop Minnow in black under a Jaydicator Pencil Float n Fly indicator about six to eight feet. Pro tip: black out any material on the fly that is white with a Sharpie pen.  For bonus points, paint the head black.  The topwater bite was slow with only small four to six inch bass attacking poppers.  White seemed to be the color that attracted fish.  Try a Surface Seducer Articulated Howitzer or a Double Barrel Bass Bug.

Fishing is best during the morning hours.  As the day progresses, the bite can slow down.  During the warmer parts of the day, drop your flies into the shadowed areas.
