Lower Yuba River Fly Fishing Report
Date: October 14, 2025
Conditions: Low and clear flows
The Lower Yuba River is fishing well right now, though conditions are technical with low and clear flows. Fish are concentrated in certain areas and showing some skittish behavior, so a stealthy approach is key.
Hot Patterns & Hatches
The primary action is coming on egg patterns, especially around salmon actively cutting redds. These salmon are scattered throughout the river — not stacked up in any one spot — so covering water is essential to find productive zones.
There are also midday caddis hatches on warmer days, with tan caddis in size 14–16 making an appearance. On overcast days, expect a decent baetis (BWO) hatch, which can bring some fish up in the flats. Targeting these risers is a more technical game — best done from a boat anchored above feeding fish — but it can be rewarding for the patient angler.
Outlook
As more salmon move onto the redds, expect the egg bite to improve in the coming weeks. A bump in flows and a little color in the water would help the fishing, but that change is likely still a ways off.
Tips for Success
Use lighter tippet and longer leaders to stay stealthy in clear water.
Focus on egg patterns near spawning salmon.
Watch for rising fish during hatches — especially in the mid-river flats.
Boat anglers have an edge in covering water and positioning above pods of fish.
