Lower Yuba River Report

Capt. Ben Thompson

The lower yuba is dropping into around 1500 cfs. Water clarity is excellent and fishing has been fun. In the mornings the nymphing has been decent some days and slower others- but that’s not my focus this time of year. What has been a blast is the skwala hatch. From 11 or 12 o’clock on we are throwing skwala dries and having good success doing so. There are active risers, bugs on the water, and weather has been great. Some days there has also been pmd pinkies coming off a bit early in the day which has made for some good late morning dry fly action. So far this has been the best skwala hatch I have seen in a few years and hopefully the weather will continue to cooperate. Drag free drifts and working the good edges and seams have provided some awesome eats and good fish. I have tomorrow February 4 open, after that I have Feb 16-19 open for trips, happy to get you out there to throw skwalas from a boat covering ground giving you the optimal chances for success.

We have been fortunate to find a few steelhead in the mornings as well…while this is never a guarantee it is nice to see more steelhead than I have seen in the river since 2021.
