Lower Yuba River Fly Fishing Report – Spring 2026
The Lower Yuba River fly fishing conditions are improving quickly as the river continues to clear after recent high water. Current flows are sitting around 4,200 CFS, which is a level I personally like to see this time of year. With the river stabilizing and visibility improving, fishing conditions should continue to trend upward over the next several days.
Current River Conditions
At around 4,200 CFS, the Lower Yuba is still considered high water, but these flows often create excellent opportunities for anglers fishing from a drift boat. The recent break in pressure has likely allowed fish to settle back into predictable feeding patterns.
With the river clearing up, trout will begin holding along softer edges, inside bends, and slower seams, where they can conserve energy while feeding on drifting insects. These types of holding water become especially productive during elevated flows like we’re seeing now.
Wade Fishing Conditions
For wade anglers, the Lower Yuba is still running too high to safely access many areas of the river. At these flows, wading opportunities are limited and caution should be used if accessing the river on foot. Until flows drop further, boat-based fishing will provide the best access and most consistent fishing.
Spring Hatches Starting to Build
With warmer weather arriving, we should begin seeing increased insect activity on the Lower Yuba River over the next few weeks. Spring is one of the best times of the year for dry fly opportunities as multiple hatches begin to overlap.
Anglers should start watching for:
March Browns
Pale Morning Duns (PMDs)
Early season Caddis
As water clarity continues to improve and temperatures stabilize, these hatches should bring fish to the surface more consistently.
What to Expect Over the Next Few Weeks
The combination of improving water clarity, stable flows, and warming temperatures should set up some very good fishing on the Lower Yuba heading deeper into spring. Trout that have had a break during the high water will start to concentrate in predictable feeding lanes, which often leads to excellent nymphing and increasing dry fly opportunities.
If flows remain stable and clarity continues to improve, the next few weeks could offer some of the best early-season fly fishing on the Lower Yuba River.
