Napa River Fly Fishing Report

Water Clarity: 1–4 ft
Water Temperature: 69°F

The Napa River has been fishing consistently this fall for fly anglers targeting striped bass. Good numbers of schoolie-sized fish are holding in the lower river, with plenty of bait still present and keeping the bite steady. Conditions are setting up nicely for an even stronger push of fish as we move into October and November, when cooler temps typically bring some of the best fly fishing of the year.

Both intermediate and full-sink lines are working well depending on tide and depth. Productive flies include Clousers, Deceivers, and small baitfish patterns in chartreuse/white, olive/white, and gray/white. When the water has a little more color, try flies with some flash or darker silhouettes to help fish locate them.

Focus your efforts around current seams, channel edges, and tidal flats during moving water, especially the first half of the incoming tide, which has been producing the most consistent action. Early mornings and late afternoons are prime times to find active fish near the surface, and you may even get a shot or two on a topwater gurgler or crease fly if conditions line up.

Overall, the Napa is in great shape for fly anglers right now — steady action, healthy fish, and beautiful fall conditions on the river. Expect things to only get better heading into late fall.

Tight lines and bent rods!
