Lower Sacramento River Striper Fishing Report
Fishing Conditions:
Striper fishing on the Lower Sac is currently good to very good. Bigger fish are beginning to show and feed more aggressively, and solid numbers of schoolies and smaller fish are actively working the feeding zones.
Weather & Water Conditions:
Unseasonably mild weather in the valley has kept morning temperatures cooler than usual. As a result, fish can be slow early, but typically become active by late morning or midday.
Productive Tactics & Flies:
Most fish are being caught on type 5–7 sinking lines, with patterns ranging from heavy 4/0 rattle Clousers to smaller Puglisi-style flies.
Water clarity varies significantly along the river due to turbidity from tributaries, so fly size and color selection should be adjusted accordingly.
Hot color combinations have included:
Olive over white
Olive over yellow
All black
River Clarity Note:
Thunderstorms in the mountains can muddy the eastern tributaries, which affects downstream visibility until the next tributary enters. Fly selection should be based on the clarity in your stretch of river—being able to adapt to changing water is key to success.
Sight Fishing Outlook:
Water temperatures are colder than normal for this time of year, and the typical late-summer intermediate line/sight fishing season has yet to kick off. If things warm up and stabilize, we might see a short sight fishing window by mid-August, but it’s not guaranteed this season.
Looking Ahead:
Fishing should remain strong as we approach the August 9th full moon.
