Shad Season

Shad Season is Here – Gear Up and Get Out!

It’s that special time of year again! Spring in Northern California is an excellent season for fly anglers of all skill levels. Not only are our resident fish species actively feeding or spawning, but we also have the exciting opportunity to pursue one of our favorite anadromous species—the American Shad.

Each spring, giant schools of shad migrate up our river systems to spawn, making for an exhilarating fishing experience. If you haven’t fished for shad before, or if you’re new to the world of fly fishing, this is a fantastic introductory program. That said, it’s equally rewarding for seasoned anglers.

There are various methods to target shad, and many anglers have their personal favorites. Whether you prefer wading and swinging mini-spey or single-handed rods, nymphing or tight-lining in deep runs and seams, or anchoring up in a boat to shoot sink lines off the stern—there’s fun to be had, and your ideal method is waiting to be discovered.

With healthy reservoir levels and steady flows, we’re predicting an excellent shad season this year. A 4–6 wt rod is ideal, paired with either integrated sinking lines or, if you’re traveling light, a floating line with a selection of poly leaders in different sink rates to adapt to conditions on the river.

As for flies—or “shad darts”—pink, orange, red, and chartreuse are always solid choices. (Pro tip: the best fly often looks like nothing that actually lives in the river!)
