American River Fly Fishing Report
Flows: 1,000 cfs
Water Clarity: Clear with a slight tea tint
Rating: Good
Fishing on the American River has been really enjoyable lately, especially for 16–18 inch hatchery steelhead. Anglers are finding success both nymphing the drops and riffles or swinging the runs with flies.
Gear & Techniques:
Indicator nymphing: 9’6” 6-weight rods
Spey swinging: 4–5 weight rods with Type 1.5–6 ips sink tips
Flies:
Eggs
Prince Nymph
Foxes Poopah
Birds Nest
Copper John
Hogan’s S&M
Pheasant Tail
The fish have been grabby and aggressive, making this a great time to swing a caddis or soft-hackle fly. Salmon anglers are out in numbers, but heading out mid-morning, when many have left, can help you find quieter water.
Season Notes:
Salmon fishing closes on October 15th in the upper river
Steelhead fishing closes October 31st
With this beautiful fall weather and consistent action, it’s a perfect time to be on the river.
Tight lines!
