Travis Johnson & Jason Renfro Spey Casting Clinics

Travis Johnson is a well-known fly fishing guide in Oregon and a long time Spey casting competitor on both the National and International level. He’s a 3x Men’s Open Champion at Spey O Rama and has won the World Championships once. Northern California fly casting instructor Jason Renfro will be working alongside Travis to help participants up their Spey game and take their casting to a new level.

May 22nd and 24th will be for participants more intermediate in experience and skill looking to improve, make their existing casts stronger – and perhaps learn some new casts as well!

May 23rd will be a more fundamentally focused class to help newer Spey casters get a firm grasp of the basics to get their journey started on sound footing.

Dec Hogan is one of the best known and foremost authorities on Steelhead fly fishing in the last 30 years. If you already love or are even interested in pursuing these magical fish with a two-handed rod and want to gain from decades of guiding and fishing experience, this is a perfect opportunity. With the help of some guy called Jason Renfro, Dec will be here to discuss and teach all things Spey with a focus on the cast and what comes next. Get a masterclass on how to make the cast, swing the fly and present your offerings to the fish we all love. This class is designed and geared for anglers of all levels to walk away with new skills and learnings whether you’re new to Spey or have been at it for years. A little bit of what we’ll be covering:

  • The essentials of the cast
    • Proper lift
    • Anchor placement
    • The secrets of the sweep/how to form the d-loop
    • Alignment
    • An easy and efficient forward stroke
    • And more!
  • What angle should I cast here?
  • Should I mend?... how?... why…?
  • What do I want my fly to do?

Fly Tying

Beginner and advanced classes available.

There's nothing more gratifying as a fly fishing angler than catching a fish on something you created. And it's not as hard as you may think. To help get you in the game, Fly Fishing Specialties offers a series of fly tying classes, from beginning thru advanced.

Our Fly Tying classes are held at the shop and scheduled as needed. Our instructor, Dennis Lee, has many years of experience and is a well known accomplished angler. If you would like to attend, please call the shop for dates and to check availability to reserve your spot. Also, once a month we have a free “Tyin 'N' Lyin” session after the shop closes and everyone is always invited. Pizza is provided!

*Required Items: Fly tying vise, thread bobbin, scissors, fly tying materials.

Begin Your Journey with Renfro Fly Fishing

FFS is proud to partner with Jason Renfro of Renfro Fly Fishing to offer a class for those interested in getting started or learning more about fly fishing. It's designed to be a fun, approachable and informative way to get familiar with the fundamentals of fly fishing and fly casting. The class covers the items you need to get started, an explanation of gear, fly selection, terminology, basic knots, etc. Additionally, all students will get the opportunity to learn the proper fundamentals of fly casting and how to start their experience with sound fundamentals. This will provide an invaluable stepping stone to begin your fly fishing journey and alleviate many of the pitfalls common for those new to fly fishing. Bring a hat, sunglasses, a snack, a water bottle and be ready to ask questions and have a good time!
 
Classes are usually held at Fly Fishing Specialties retail store the 2nd Saturday of each month. The class is limited to 10 participants. If you are interested in attending one of the upcoming Begin Your Journey classes, please call the shop at (916) 722-1055.
