California Delta Fly Fishing Report – Late Fall Conditions
With this stretch of amazing fall weather, striper fishing has been excellent in the far west and north sections of the California Delta! While the central Delta has fished a bit tougher this October, the recent windless days have provided perfect conditions for running way out into the bays and chasing fish in shallow water.
We’ve been fishing intermediate and Type 3 lines, depending on depth, and keeping fly selection simple. Smaller 3-inch bucktail Clouser-style flies in olive or chartreuse over white have been producing near the rocks, while slightly larger 4- to 5-inch olive-over-orange patterns are working well across the flats and in the weeds.
With the small tides we’ve been seeing, water clarity has been fantastic—good enough that we’re actually watching stripers eat on occasion! Early mornings have been ideal with Costa Silver Sunrise lenses, then switching to Gold lenses once the sun climbs.
The fall action is still going strong, but it won’t last forever—get out there soon and enjoy some of the best sight-fishing and striper action of the season!
