Lower Feather River Report – Joe Garza
There are good numbers of salmon scattered throughout the system between Oroville and Gridley. They’re still holding in large groups and haven’t paired up yet. At this stage, they’re showing aggressive behavior, often chasing smaller steelhead.
For fly anglers, the usual patterns have been productive: #16–18 Baetis in brown and olive, and #14 tan Caddis. A few fish have also been taken on egg patterns. Both the high flow and low flow sections are fishing well for steelhead.
As flows continue to drop in the high flow section, expect more fish to shift into the low flow and begin pairing up. This transition should take place over the next few weeks.
If you haven’t booked your fall fishing trip yet, now’s the time—the egg bite is just around the corner.
