Fly Fishing Christmas Island: A Tropical Angler’s Paradise

The recent six-day fly fishing adventure to Christmas Island in September was a dream trip for the 15 anglers who participated, hosted by Fly Fishing Specialties’ own Dennis Estrada and Terry Thomas. Nestled in the heart of the Pacific, Christmas Island delivered tropical conditions, with warm trade winds, crystal-clear flats, and vibrant sunsets setting the tone for an unforgettable fishing experience. It was as if our anglers were blessed like the rains down in Africa.

The island’s waters teem with diverse species, making every cast a chance for something new. While Bonefish reigned as the primary target—plentiful and willing to take a fly—the true addiction for many was the Triggerfish. These colorful, finicky fish challenged anglers with their spooky nature and strong fights. Lurking in the deeper channels and reef edges, Giant Trevally (GTs) added a thrill of anticipation each day. Though elusive and often seen more than caught, the sheer power and aggression of the GT made every encounter unforgettable. Somedays the fishing was so good that our anglers would keep forgetting how many fish were caught.

Expert guiding made a world of difference. Local guides displayed a remarkable ability to spot fish from afar, offer strategic advice, and patiently coach anglers through the often-demanding presentations. Comfortable beachfront lodging at The Villages provided a cool and relaxing retreat each evening, and the meals were a delightful surprise—fresh seafood, local flavors, and plenty of camaraderie around the dinner table made each night feel like a celebration. The vibe was like a summer breeze. It made everyone feel fine.

In review, the Christmas Island fly fishing experience exceeded all expectations. With diverse species, stunning scenery, world-class guides, and the knowledgeable leadership of Dennis and Terry, it was more than just a fishing trip—it was a true angler’s adventure. Many will return, and those who haven’t gone yet should start planning.
