Lake Almanor water temperatures continue to be elevated at 73°F around most of the lake. However, inlets and springs have been productive in the mornings. Fish are staying deep so Balanced leech and midges under an indicator has been the go to method. With the heat forecast to increase, I suspect fishing will slow for a few days as water temps rise again. We have the Float Pond Smelt hatch getting ready to start at the end of August until November. Depending on water temperatures, this year should be good with all the smelt beginning to move to the coves for their spawn. Our big browns will be searching for a lot of food as they prepare to make their way into the tributaries to spawn. Nothing beats casting floating pond smelt to large brown trout on a feeding frenzy on the surface!
