Fishing Reports

Lake Oroville Report by: Ryan Williams

Lake Oroville is producing excellent fishing right now, and conditions are lining up for one of the best late fall and early winter seasons in recent years. Ryan Williams of Fly Fishing Specialties is on the water daily, and his latest report confirms what many anglers anticipate each November and December: this is prime time on Oroville. The bite is strong, the fish are aggressive, and the floating fly technique is putting big numbers in the net.

Water temperatures are holding around 57 to 58 degrees, which is ideal for active spotted bass. During a recent morning trip, Ryan recorded 57.8 degrees on the surface and connected with fifteen fish by 9 a.m. using the floating fly setup. Fish quality is high, with strong, chunky bass that are fighting harder now than they will at any other time of year. Late fall brings peak conditioning for spotted bass on Oroville, and their power shows the moment the rod loads.

Fishing the floating fly remains the most consistent approach. Leader depths of eight to nine feet are producing steady action, with groups of fish tracking and inspecting the fly on nearly every cast. On average, anglers are seeing a grab every six or seven casts, and many fish are committing aggressively. This level of activity usually holds through mid January, making the next several weeks the best window to experience Oroville at its strongest.

November and December are historically the top months to target spotted bass on Lake Oroville with a fly rod, and this season is no exception. The combination of ideal water temperatures, high fish counts, and heavyweight bass feeding hard before winter creates a unique opportunity for fly anglers. Right now the lake is fishing incredibly well, and conditions suggest it will stay that way well into the new year.

If you have been waiting for the right time to fish Lake Oroville, this is it. The lake is on fire, the quality is excellent, and the floating fly technique is delivering consistent results for anglers of all experience levels.
