I have been on the yuba a lot over the last two weeks. Flows have been up and fluctuating a bit largely between 4,000 cfs and a bit over 5,000 cfs. These bigger flows keep most people off of the river so we have been enjoying quiet floats without seeing another angler most days. The dry fly fishing has not been good but the nymph game has been excellent. At the bigger flows the fish will sit in the softer water on seams and inside corners and in slower flats. We have seen a good variety of bugs from march browns, skwalas, caddis, pmds, baetis, little yellow sallies and midges- but they are pretty sporadic and the hatches are not big, it is a bug here and there. They have been consistently eating rubberlegs and sucker spawn, along with the nymph version of whatever else is hatching in the afternoons. Peaches and cream, birds nests and s&ms have seen some good action as well. We have also been finding a few smaller hatchery steelhead in the river that are likely lost feather fish.
With the good amount of water we have I look forward to a fun spring and hopefully another great hopper season this summer.
