Steelhead Fishing Trip

Steelhead Fishing Trip Report – British Columbia

In early spring, I traveled to British Columbia to fish with Nicholas Dean Outdoors. Their general manager and guides are best in class. This journey combined the thrill of chasing steelhead with the stunning backdrop of Canada’s rugged wilderness. Known for its world-class steelhead rivers, BC delivered an unforgettable experience both on and off the water.

My trip centered around the Skeena River system, renowned for its winter and early spring steelhead runs. One of the great things about fishing with Nicholas Dean is that you’re not limited to just one river—I was able to fish five rivers in six days. The Skeena was cold and off-color; conditions were tough for swinging flies. However, its tributaries were in good shape. Using a spey rod and Intruder-style patterns, I spent long days covering water, focusing on proper presentation and fly speed.

British Columbia Fishing

The fish were as challenging as they were rewarding. Powerful and elusive, every hookup felt earned. Over the course of the trip, I managed to land several beautiful fish—as did everyone on our trip. Each fish was a testament to the pristine ecosystems and careful management of BC’s fisheries.

Aside from the fishing, the scenery was breathtaking. Towering evergreens, snow-dusted peaks, and mist-laced rivers created a serene and humbling atmosphere. Wildlife sightings—from bald eagles to moose—added to the wild charm of the experience.

Nicholas Dean and the Yellow Cedar Lodge are the premier outfitter and lodge in Terrace. Each guest has their own room and private bath, plus a personal locker in the drying room to store all their gear. After fishing, guests are greeted in the wader room with a steaming hot towel and a cocktail before heading to the lodge or the campfire for appetizers.

The food is off the charts. Chefs Mark and Amanda, along with the staff, take this trip to another level. Breakfasts are made to order, hot soup at lunch on a cold day is a game changer, and dinners are amazing, featuring a wide variety of themed menus. Trust me—you will not go hungry, and you won’t be able to resist trying everything.

This trip wasn’t just about catching fish—it was about reconnecting with nature, refining skills, and enjoying the camaraderie of fellow anglers, sitting by the campfire in the evening telling fish stories. British Columbia and its legendary waters remain a dream destination for any steelhead angler, and I left already thinking about when I could return.
